Paulsen 1103 was selected in southern Italy for its strong drought tolerance and its ability to grow well on lime-based soils. This rootstock has been widely planted during the post-AXR #1/biotype B era; it induces strong vigor to scions, particularly on fertile soils with ample water. 1103 seems well suited for dry-farmed vineyards, and it is reported to have more drought tolerance than 110R. This rootstock has good phylloxera resistance, but is susceptible to root-knot and dagger nematodes. 1103 leaves are more gray-green, less shiny than 110R, its shoot tips are more hairy, and it has "naked veins" along the petiolar sinus.
